Is ozone from soclean dangerous
Consumers who have experienced a fire or recently restored a house may want to get rid of the odor left over by using an ozone generator.
Many ozone generator manufacturers claim that ozone is not only an effective way to remove air pollution, but that it is relatively safe as well. However, according to the EPA, while some levels of ozone are acceptable, ozone generators can often exceed safety limits and cause health issues.
Ozone Machine Dangers
Ozone generators are also unlikely to get rid of most indoor air pollution. Ozone is very similar to the oxygen needed for the human body, except it has an extra atom of oxygen added to the molecular structure. This extra atom can easily attach to other molecules, hence the idea that one can "oxidize" pollution to get rid of it. However, according to the EPA, the "oxidizing" theory is highly debatable when it comes to ozone generators.
According to Air Purifier Power, when ozone from an ozone generator comes in contact with the skin, it can form the toxic compound hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide, commonly known as bleach, is formed by immersing ozone into water. Thus, when ozone comes into contact with moist parts of the body, such as a lung, it essentially forms bleach and can cause respiratory problems. The Food and Drug Administration regulates ozone from medical devices, and OSHA limits how much ozone an employee may be exposed to, but nothing regulates how much ozone a home generator may produce.
According to the EPA, how much harm an ozone generator can do depends on the size of the room that contains the generator. In addition, ozone generator settings do not have an industry standard; a medium setting can vary drastically between brands. According to the EPA, ozone is sometimes useful for decontaminating a room not used by anyone.
However, there is no scientific research data about the long-term or short-term side effects of the decontamination of biological and chemical pollutants with ozone. Anything containing a dye or pigment is likely to experience damage from ozone decontamination.
People are also especially advised to not enter a room with a high level of ozone. The EPA suggests that ozone generators do little to reduce air pollution and odors. Scientific research accepted by the EPA shows that ozone can take months, and even years, to remove indoor chemical pollution. At this slow reaction rate, ozone is essentially considered inert with compounds like carbon monoxide.
For substances that ozone does quickly react with, scientific studies accepted by the EPA show ozone produced a larger mass of harmful compounds than the substances which it eliminated. This can cause a variety of health issues, including:. The generator inside the SoClean breaks down the chemical bond of common oxygen O2 and allows it to recombine into a new molecule that has three atoms of oxygen instead of two. Activated oxygen has a short life cycle. After being generated it automatically decomposes back to oxygen within two hours.
Your SoClean generates and pumps the activated oxygen through the supply tube and into your humidifier reservoir. This cleans not only the water, but also the inner walls of your reservoir. The activated oxygen moves through your CPAP hose As it travels, the activated oxygen reaches every crevice, eliminating all threatening bacteria. The activated oxygen reaches your mask. The activated oxygen passes into and out of your mask during this step, cleaning it just as it did with your hose and reservoir.
This can cause a variety of health issues, including: Pneumonia Bronchitis Infections Nasal Passage Irritation and more… The key to the natural sanitation process? Activated oxygen exits the chamber through a special filter. This filter converts any excess activated oxygen back into the oxygen that we breathe O2. The activated oxygen process: Destroys any organic matter it comes in contact with Has a short but powerful life cycle After being generated, activated oxygen reverts back into common oxygen O2 in about two hours.
Is used as a sanitizing method is used in other industries Such as municipal water purifications, the hotel and food processing industries, and in hospitals Other information to know The process is completely automated Complete a one-time setup, place your CPAP mask in the chamber, and shut the lid.
SoClean eliminates It only involves that activated oxygen we were talking about. Only takes 10 minutes of your day Which saves you precious time you can spend elsewhere.I have been a clinician in the sleep business for a long time. Sometimes I see a product on the market that raises an eyebrow, and sometimes I see a product that raises genuine concern. Patients with obstructive sleep apnea OSA run the gamut from healthy and athletic to those faced with other comorbidities such as asthma, COPA, and pulmonary fibrosis.
It is that overlap of the patient population that concerns me most when I see ozone-based CPAP cleaners heavily marketed. Because ozone is not what other manufacturers advertise it to be i. Rather, ozone is a toxic gas.
FDA regulations are pretty clear on this:. In order for ozone to be effective as a cleaner, it must be present in a concentration far greater than that which can be safely tolerated by man and animals. Inhalation of ozone can cause sufficient irritation to the lungs to result in pulmonary edema.
The onset of pulmonary edema is usually delayed for some hours after exposure; thus, symptomatic response is not a reliable warning of exposure to toxic concentrations of ozone. Since olfactory fatigue develops readily, the odor of ozone is not a reliable index of atmospheric ozone concentration. The two products I see in the marketplace that rely on ozone for cleaning are SoClean and VirtuClean.
The Science Behind SoClean
One has a warning not to use the CPAP equipment for several hours. The other has no warning at all for a waiting period. But, how much ozone is being vented in the room? Is it safe for pets, children and the elderly? Does the product label even indicate how much ozone is released? If a patient wants to use an ozone product, at least some awareness as to the risks needs to be raised to ensure that the product is used safely and as directed.
The worst thing that can happen is that the patient does not wait several hours to use and inhales a full column of ozone in the CPAP hose into their lungs, or the device vents enough ozone to raise the room concentration above 0. A Sleep Professional with over 20 years of industry experience, a healthy respect for research and a slightly sarcastic writing style. Most of the people suffering from sleep disorders use a CPAP machine to get a sound sleep.
It is essential to clean a CPAP machine for ensuring health benefits from it. Various types of CPAP ozone cleaner are available in the market. Since Ozone is activated oxygen which is different from normal oxygen we inhale.
Is activated oxygen safe? To answer this query, we must tell you that it is not a safe form of Oxygen and it surrounds the globe to protect it from the harmful UV rays.
Ozone is formed by the combination of normal oxygen with another oxygen atom. After the bonding of a normal oxygen molecule with an oxygen atom, the resultant molecule, Ozone O3 is highly supercharged. Ozone has more potential than bleach and chlorine to easily destroy bacterias or oxidize other molecules.
In the market, there are many water filtration systems and air purifier systems which make use of Ozone. This clearly means that for normal use of cleaning purpose, there is no harm of CPAP cleaners to our health. It is possible to completely sterilize the dirty tube interior with the use of CPAP ozone cleaner. Also, the various brands of CPAP ozone cleaners are sufficient to convert the ozone back to the norma oxygen form. This would make these products safe to use for everybody.
While choosing a CPAP ozone cleaner, it should be ensured that it created a safe ozone containment in the cleaning space. The ozone created by such products should not be pumped into the room as it needs to be there at tolerable levels. A sealed cleaning chamber and a carbon filter should be there to eliminate all the bacteria and ensure the safe use of it.

Hello Guest! Login Username: Password: Lost Password? Remember me. Login or Create an Account. I understand that the use of the SoClean 2 is very controversial in the community so my question is not about whether it is effective or worth the money My question is : Is there scientific data excluding personal opinions that indicates it is or is not safe for a cpap user to use on a daily basis.
There isn't any document or study that provides any conclusive results of its efficacy. Their FAQ's state that a manual periodic cleaning is required.
At the end of the day, it's your money. Its price will buy a lot of Dawn. Crimson Nape Apnea Board Moderator www. No there is nothing that says it is unsafe to use. I have used a SoClean 2 for over a month. I wash my mask off with sunlight dish soap, dry it with a microfibre cloth and place the mask Philips Dreamwear nasal mask into the machine. I also fill the water tank at this time. This is late enough for me to always be out of bed. SoClean will not clean the oil off your mask. I need to purge a blast of air through the mask when I first put it on to clear the ozone out of the system.
Is it safe? I don't know, does it work?
SoClean 2 CPAP Cleaner Review - What's the Verdict?
Who knows? I'm happy I don't clean my hose which is a royal pain. Thanks for the reply My question however was about safety not efficacy Any information regarding safety specifically?? Safe for you? Safe for the materials in the machine?
4 Reasons You Should NEVER Use An Ozone Generator to Clean Your Indoor Air
I have used the SoClean 2 for about 7 months. I use it in an unusual way-I only clean the hose.Skip to content. Quick links. The machine is basically a box with a lid that my mask sits in while still connected to the hose I don't have to take anything apart.
A timer turns it on and when it's done, everything is sanitized and smells great. So far, I'm pretty happy with it and I thought I'd pass this on to anyone interested. I use it alternately in the kitchen, bathroom for odors, etc.
I am just getting over a viral pulmonary infection, so it's a timely idea. Don't know what I did to hide the Equipment?! Does anyone know if it is safe to use on the blower? Ozone is not nice to electronics--I'd want to be sure those parts are isolated from the airstream.
Meanwhile a small hose is integrated into your humidifier reservoir via a plastic fitting. The bottom of this hose sits under the water level. When the machine turns on, it generates ozone that's pumped into the reservoir, passes through the hose and comes out of the mask which is enclosed in the chamber. The excess ozone then passes through a filter that converts it into regular oxygen as it's expelled from the machine.
It's all a closed circuit, so I don't see how any ozone could adversely effect any electronics. I also seem to have less sinus issues You can see it if you go to the Better Rest Solutions website. Any plastic, rubber, just about anything but nylon or silicone will degrade upon exposure to ozone. Exposure time and ozone concentration are determinative of the level of damage, so be forewarned. Once or twice should be no problem, but I'd steer clear of using ozone on a regular basis.
A solution of hydrogen peroxide or weak bleach solution would be safer. They did say it would destroy nylon, natural rubber, and some other materials not usually used in CPAP equipment. I Googled "ozone compatibility" and was able to pull up a number of lists that describe what works and what doesn't work with ozone. Be your own healthcare advocate! Please enter your equipment in your profile so we can help you. There is a growing amount of written material regarding the use of ozone generators to improve indoor air quality.
Unfortunately, much of the material makes claims and draws conclusions without substantiation or sound science. There are even some vendors which suggest that their devices have been approved by the federal government, despite the fact that there is not one agency within the federal government which has approved ozone generators for use in occupied spaces.
The EPA published several documents which highlight the risks and dangers of ozone and why ozone generators should be avoided. Ozone is a tiny molecule which is composed of three oxygen atoms. It is highly reactive which makes it an unstable and potentially toxic gas.
Ground-level ozone is considered to be a major component of smog which plagues larger cities during the summertime and has been tied to a variety of potential health risks. The EPA has reported there is a variety of health effects associated with high levels of ozone.
This may include decreased lung function, throat irritation, severe asthma symptoms, cough, chest pain, shortness of breath, irritation of lung tissue, and the higher sensitivity to respiratory infection. They went on to note that there were additional risk factors which can perpetuate the side effects of ozone such as undertaking activities which raise breathing rates such as exercising indoorscertain pre-existing lung diseases, and greater duration of exposure.
Not only is ozone potentially dangerous to your health, it may not even work at all. Below are four reasons why you should never use an air purifier that produces ozone. Some manufacturers suggest that ozone will render nearly every chemical contaminant in the home harmless by producing a chemical reaction. This is incredibly misleading because a thorough review of scientific research has shown that in order for many of the dangerous chemicals found indoors to be eliminated the chemical reaction process may take months or even years.
Other studies have also PDF noted that ozone cannot effectively remove carbon monoxide or from outside.
If used at concentrations that do not exceed public health standards, ozone applied to indoor air pollution does not effectively remove viruses, mold, bacteria, or other biological pollutants. Even if ozone generators were proven to be effective at eliminating these chemicals, there are certain side effects everyone must be aware of.
Many of the chemicals ozone reacts to results in a variety of harmful by-products. For example, when ozone was mixed with chemicals from new carpet in a laboratory setting, the ozone reduced many of the chemicals but created a variety of dangerous organic chemicals in the air. While the target chemicals were reduced, the dangerous byproducts rendered the process moved. A third factor to consider when looking at ozone generators is that they do not remove particulates such as dust or pollen from the air.
This includes the particles which are primarily responsible for allergic reactions. To combat this, some ozone generators include an ionizer which disperses negatively charged ions into the air. The EPA notes that it is increasingly difficult to determine the actual concentration of ozone produced by an ozone generator because so many different factors come into play.
Concentrations will be higher if more powerful devices used in smaller spaces. Whether or not the interior doors are closed rather than open will affect concentrations as well.
Additional factors which affect concentration levels include how many materials and furnishings are in the room to react with ozone, the level of outdoor air ventilation, and the proximity of a person to the ozone generating device.
Choosing a HEPA filter is a significantly safer and effective solution than an ozone generator. Instead of releasing dangerous ozone, a HEPA filter traps indoor air pollutants rather than trying to create a chemical reaction with them. This means when you purchase an air purifier which relies on this type of technology, you can rest easy knowing exactly what the level of effectiveness will be. In many cases, this type of filter is often combined with other technologies, such as activated carbonto provide even better results.
Utilizing a pre-filter and activated carbon, air purifiers can remove solid, chemical, and gaseous pollutants from the air and dramatically improve indoor air quality.
